MEMORY VERSE: Hebrews 5: 12 – “In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truth of God’s Word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!”
HYMN: MHB 373(L.M.) – LORD, I was blind! I could not see.
A dwarf is one whose growth is stunted. The growth suddenly stopped prematurely even when there were opportunities and nutrients. Such also happens spiritually, when one is below God’s expectation in knowledge and dispositions.
Our passage today is a letter to Christians who exhibited spiritual immaturity probably as a result of practising Jewish ceremonies, legalism and rituals in accordance with traditions of the fathers at the detriment of their spiritual growth (Mark 7:1-9). Instead of studying the scriptures with eagerness to pursue holiness and the will of God like the Berean Christians, they became complacent with milk (elementary) and not solid food (advanced principles of the truth).
Today, the Church is flooded with spiritual dwarfs as a result of religiosity without morality. The Church is plagued with many distracted priests on the altar and confused members on the pews who are too lazy for Bible Study and too poor to produce the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Spiritual growth occurs with commitment in studying and practising the Word of God, constant prayer, meditation and yielding to the Holy Spirit (Psalm 1:2-3).
A spiritual dwarf lacks intellectual growth and the sensitivity to receive spiritual gifts. He becomes unskilled in the Word of God and has his name deleted from the book of life. A spiritual dwarf is a disappointment to God. He gratifies the lust of the flesh in his religious arrogance (Gal 5:19-21).
As we observe the holy week, pause and check your relationship with God to know whether you are dwarfed spiritually. Are you still a baby in the Lord in spite of your high religious portfolios, or a full-grown on solid food stage and skillful in the Word? How many people have you taught the truth in the Bible in all your years as a Christian? Be not a spiritual dwarf.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, save us from spiritual dwarfism that we may do away with empty religiosity and grow in the knowledge of Your Word. Help us to teach others Your Word through our character and preaching, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
