THEME: CARE FOR THE LESS-PRIVILEGED
PASSAGE: EXODUS 22:21-27
MEMORY VERSE: Leviticus 19:10 “And you shall not glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather every grape of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger: I am the Lord your God.”
HYMN: MHB 338 (188.8.131.52. and refrain) – RESCUE the perishing, care for the dying.
Our text today is on social responsibility, especially to the less-privileged in the society – the fatherless, the poor, the widow, the stranger, the homeless and maids. God says that whoever oppresses any of the mentioned people shall pay dearly for it.
It is quite clear from this passage that God cares about our attitudes and actions regarding the hungry, the oppressed, the widows, the strangers, the less-privileged and the orphans. It is stated in the scripture that such people must not be cheated, but that we should show love and concern towards them. Again, in lending money to the poor, one shall not charge interest from them (Exodus 22:25.) Serving the poor is an opportunity for divine worship unto God (John 12:8, Proverbs 19:17).
Why must we care for the less privileged?
Serving them always brings honour to God (Proverbs 14:31);
Helping them is giving back to God;
He that refreshes others must also be refreshed;
These are Commands from the Almighty God that must be fulfilled.
Matthew 25:45 says, “Jesus will answer them, saying: Assuredly I say unto you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me”. In essence, we can give to God through people who are in need.
Care for the poor and the less fortunate people in the society directly follows the truth of the gospel. We, as His Church, have a direct call and command to exhibit the same attitude towards others who are in need. To deny this responsibility is to deny the Scripture.
Beloved, God wants us to manifest a positive attitude to the less-privileged in our midst because there is an abundance of blessings in return. Proverbs 28:27 says, “He that gives to the poor shall not lack but he that hides his eyes from them shall have many curses,” and whoever blocks his ears from the cry of the poor shall himself not be heard by God (Prov.21:19).
PRAYER: Dear Lord, plant in my heart the seed to always show love and care to the less-privileged, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
