PASSAGE: LUKE 10:30-37
MEMORY VERSE: Luke 10:37 “And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”
HYMN: EMHB 717 (C.M.) – HELP us to help each other, Lord.
Sometimes, a lot of things may debar us from showing mercy, which the Samaritan displayed to a stranger in our passage today. If you closely study the parable, the Priest and the Levite that dodged the man might have thought that they were fulfilling the law. They must have assumed that the man may die soon and considered that as a priest or a Levite they should not touch a dead body. I don’t know what your excuses are also, why you have refused to show someone an act of mercy. The reality that faces us makes our world more delicate to show acts of mercy, but that will not in any way change the standard of the Word of God.
I wonder why someone that claims to be a Christian should be callous and unbearable among the people. To be merciful is to reflect the kindness of God and to those that we think do not deserve it. There are always people who need your help around you. Be like that good Samaritan to them. God is recording every work of mercy for you in heaven. Give to the poor without attaching any string to your gift.
Jesus Christ our role model never discriminated. He went about doing good (Acts 10:38) and is still in the service of doing good. He says, that we have no credit if we love only those who love us or do good to those who do good to us; because sinners also do the same to their friends. But we should lend to sinners and do good without expecting repayment. Then our reward will be great, and we will be children of the Most High God (Luke 6:32-36).
Jesus says today, “Go and do likewise”, be kind and show mercy without discrimination; it is also produced by love.
PRAYER: Lord, you have shown me mercy day by day, if not I would have been consumed. Please, help me to do likewise to others every day of my life, in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
