FRIDAY 7TH MAY, 2021
THEME: CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP 1
PASSAGE: MATTHEW 20: 20-28
MEMORY VERSE: Matthew 20:26“But among you, it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant.”
HYMN: MHB 821(220.127.116.11.D.) –STAND up, Stand up for Jesus!
Twice Jesus had told His disciples that the first shall be the last and the last shall be the first, yet His disciples still missed the point or chose not to understand. In our Bible passage today, James and John the sons of Zebedee made a selfish request from Jesus Christ (Verse 21). Their mother requested that Jesus should grant her sons the prominent places in His Kingdom. When Jesus asked them if they would be able to drink from His cup, they immediately said ‘Yes’ because of what they wanted to gain.
Jesus Christ explained that true leadership is found in serving others. The leader must become a servant.
A true Christian leader must possess the following attributes:
– The fear of God
– Truthfulness and Trust
– Wisdom and understanding
– Strength and courage
– Fairness in all things and
– Obedience to the law of God.
Jesus already set the pattern in His own actions on our behalf; we should show ourselves as Christ-followers by following His example. He left His throne in heaven to become a wanderer with no place to lay His head. He came to the world to serve, but not to be served. He exemplified this by washing the feet of his disciples.
Sometimes in our prayers, like James and John, we are often self-centered on what we want rather than God’s glory and honor. A Christian leader should be willing at all times to allow the will of God to prevail over his will as Christ did in the garden of Gethsemane.
PRAYER: Lord, grant unto us a humble spirit and a spirit of discernment, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
