MEMORY VERSE: 2Peter 1:8 “For if these things are in you and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
HYMN: MHB 508 (D.L.M.) – AS helpless as a child who clings.
God does not only want us to be fruitful but also has provided everything that we need through His Word, just as we provide for our children in the family. In verse 3 of our text today, we were given strong promises that “His divine power has bestowed on us everything necessary for life and Godliness through the rich knowledge of the One who called us by His own glory and excellence”.
The subject of fruitfulness is so vital to God’s creation that the first words God spoke to Adam and Eve were, “Be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:28). God does not glory in your barrenness and that is why throughout the Bible, God stressed much on the issue of fruitfulness. Read Genesis 9:1, Psalm 105:24; Isaiah 60:22, John 15:12.
We must not fail to understand that our fruitfulness is tied to our constant connection to Jesus. In our quest for fruitfulness or productivity, we must not see material wealth alone as God’s idea of fruitfulness. Fame, wealth, cars, houses, children, and other necessities of life are not bad, but they cannot singularly be the standard for measuring fruitfulness. A believer does not need to enmesh himself in material wealth that does not correspond to spiritual growth.
For us to attain the required growth, we need to consider the key things from 2Peter 1:3-9, by identifying the source of our growth, how we will grow and of what benefit the growth will be to your wellbeing. There is also the need to supplement our faith with all the qualities mentioned therein and also build on them every day (2 Pet. 1:8-9). Failure to do this will result in ineffectiveness and unfruitfulness.”
Considering what John 15:8 says: “By this, My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be My disciples”, you must not sit back and expect God’s calling to suddenly land on your laps as that means that you are not growing. As you begin to implement the requirements, such as goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, Godliness, brotherly kindness, and Love among others, according to God’s directives, He will promote you, and His plans in your life will continue to unfold.
PRAYER: Lord, help me to bear good fruit, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
