THEME: HONOUR IS FROM GOD
PASSAGE: HEBREWS 5: 1 – 11
MEMORY VERSE: Hebrews 5:4 “And no man takes this honour to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was.”
HYMN: MHB 739 (C.M.) – OUR Father, hear our longing prayer.
Leviticus prescribes offerings for various sins. The offerings are brought to the priest for a sacrifice unto God for the remission of such sins. However, the priest himself at times commits sins for which he has to offer offerings. Jesus our High Priest, is sinless, and therefore, better than any of the earthly high priests or Aaronic Priesthood. Jesus’ Priesthood is everlasting and more honourable than that of Aaron and other earthly priests.
No man takes this honour to himself – and none has a right to assume an office unless he has the qualifications which God has prescribed for him. Because Jesus’ honour is of God His priesthood continues while time endures. He is not of the order of Aaron, but of Melchizedek – a king as well as a priest and a type of Christ whose beginning and the end are unknown (Genesis 14:18-19). Melchizedek was a king of Salem the city of righteousness to whom Abraham paid tithes. The Aaronic priesthood is by far inferior to that of Jesus who died for all on the cross for a one–for–all sacrifice for the sins of mankind.
Honour is well illustrated in Esther 6: 8 – 9, “Let royal robe be brought which the king has worn, and a horse on which the king has ridden, which has a royal crest placed on its head. Then let this robe and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king’s most noble princes, that he may put it on the man whom the king delights to honour … Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honour.”
When God decides to honour someone, (Hebrews 5:4) nobody can stop Him. He can do whatever He likes and nobody can query Him. God’s honour is divine and eternal. Jesus Christ did not take on Himself the glory of becoming a High Priest. However, God glorified Him. We should remember that Christ, through His humility, was honoured by the Father, so we, too, will be honoured through our humility. We should not glorify ourselves; we should humble ourselves before God, knowing that apart from Him we are nothing. All honour is from God.
PRAYER: Father, give me the spirit of humility and help me not to take the honour to myself, but wait to be honoured by You. Amen.
