MONDAY 12TH JULY, 2021
THEME: BE ON GUARD
PASSAGE: MATTHEW 10:16-20
MEMORY VERSE: Matthew 10:17 “But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and scourge you in their synagogues.”
HYMN: MHB 478 (L.M.) – JESUS, my Saviour, Brother, Friend.
The task given to every Christian by Jesus Christ, our Lord, is to go out, teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19-20). Such was the commission of the twelve disciples sent out in the passage this morning.
The Lord made it known to them that it was not going to be an easy ride. They would be operating as prey in the midst of predators. They had to go without money in their purses, bags, extra clothes, or sandals. Jesus also stressed that they would be persecuted by the leaders of the people like governors, kings, priests, Pharisees and Sadducees. Therefore, they had to be spiritually alert, careful and watchful.
Every confession of Jesus Christ as the Lord and Saviour by believers is a problem to the kingdom of darkness. Definitely, the strongman, who is being dispossessed, will not just sleep off without putting up a fight. He can use anything, including relatives or colleagues to deceive children of God. The young prophet in 1 Kings 13:11-29, never expected the old prophet to be an agent of Satan, who would lead him to disobedience. But the old prophet, who was supposed to be a role model and mentor to the young prophet lied to the latter, which eventually terminated his ministry.
Brethren, in carrying out the great commission, we cannot afford to be complacent, even if we feel that we are not being persecuted. Paul stated explicitly that those who think they are standing firm should be careful so that they would not fall (1 Corinthians 10:12). Jesus reiterated this warning when He said that we should watch and pray so that we would not fall into temptation (Matthew 26:410).
Not every gift is from God; some gifts are laced with poison or baits! Not all acts of goodness are really good; some have hooks and lines attached to them. Be spiritually alert, watchful and careful.
PRAYER: Gracious God, keep me from every enticement of the kingdom of darkness and help me to carry out Your divine assignment successfully, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
