MEMORY VERSE: James 3:9 “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it, we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness.”
HYMN: MHB 550 (C.M.) – O FOR a heart to praise my God.
There is an essential organ in the body called the tongue. The Bible refers to it as a “little member of the body” v5. Examining human anatomy, the tongue is a muscular organ in the mouth of man and animal that manipulates food for mastication and is used in the act of swallowing. It has importance in the digestive system and it is the primary organ of taste in the gustatory system.
The tongue is the most important articulator of speech. This organ is essentially important in the body but must be guided and guarded properly because it is equally dangerous. The Bible refers to it or better still defines it thus: “The tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity” (v6). The tongue has the capacity of defiling the whole body and set on fire the course of nature. A wicked tongue works on behalf of Satan, it is capable of leading many to hell.
Friend, how do you use your tongue? To bless or to curse, to insult or to praise, to tell the truth, or to manipulate the truth? Ponder a moment and examine your speeches. Apostle Paul’s admonished us on the use of the tongue, that our words should not be empty words (Eph. 4:29, 5:4 & 6), but that we should “speak to one another with Psalms, hymns, and Spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ “(Eph 5:19-29).
Let us use our tongues wisely to build each other up to the glory of God but not for slandering and gossip. The word of the Psalmist in Ps. 39:1 is worth noting here: “I said, I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence.” This is the Lord’s expectation of our lives. Our tongues must be kept holy unto the Lord.
PRAYER: Dear Father, I know my tongue is for praising You and for encouraging my fellow human being as well as for feeding. Help me not to misuse it, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
