From Genesis to Malachi, the word ‘glory’ is used about 150 times. The word ‘glory’ has two entirely unrelated meanings describing two completely different ideas. First and traditionally, glory is understood to mean “praise for the Lord”. E.g ‘Give glory to the Lord God of Israel’ (Joshua 7:9); “Give to the Lord glory and strength… give to the Lord the glory due to His name” (1 Chr. 16:28,29).
The second meaning of glory is completely different from praise for the Lord. This is clearly indicated in the following examples:
– “Behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud…” Moses, when announcing the appearance of manna…” (Exo. 16:10);
– Moses to God on Mount Sinai, “Let me see your glory,” but He was not allowed to… As My glory is passing… I will put you in the cleft of the rock and My palm will cover you during My passing”. Glory (fame, renown, awesomeness) is used to describe the manifestation of God’s presence. Glory is brilliance, radiance, beauty etc. It is a divine glow on the ‘head’ of God’s special people.
Another description of ‘glory’ is ‘a state of high honour gained from great achievements. What then is “Lost Glory”? This can be made clear to us by the examples of those who lost their glory in the Bible.
Saul the first king of Israel lost his glory through the sin of disobedience, 1Sam. 15:10-23. Samson, a great warrior destined for greatness lost his glory because he could not control his affection for immoral sex, Judges 14:16. Infidelity can rob you of your glory. Esau lost his glory to Jacob, his brother, by exchanging it with the fine red stew prepared by the latter. Parents can trade children’s glory out of selfish and ungodly affection for one child against the other.
Losing one’s glory is usually the result of human interference with the plan of God.
PRAYER: My Father and my God, help me to recover all my blessings that I have lost to the enemy. Restore my glory in full, in Jesus’ names I pray, Amen.
