WEDNESDAY 13TH OCTOBER, 2021
THEME: THE JEALOUS GOD
PASSAGE: EXODUS 20:1 – 6
MEMORY VERSE: Deuteronomy 4:24“For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.”
HYMN: MHB 453 (22.214.171.124.126.96.36.199.) – O MY Saviour, hear me.
Jealousy is being resentful over something another person has, such as material possession, attributes, talent or ability. Often it is accompanied by suspicion, envy and rivalry which lead to slander and violence. Just as in marital relationship, no spouse will want to share the partner with an intruder or stranger. So is God with us.
Nevertheless, the jealousy of God, as we read, is of different levels. God is “jealous” in the sense that He expects complete, comprehensive and exclusive devotion, not merely a partial, lip-service, half-hearted religious observance. We must acknowledge that every sincere and honest worship must belong to our God (John 4:24). In Exodus 34:14, God even declared that His name is Jealous.
In Exodus 20:3-4, God restricts allegiance to Himself alone. He says “You shall have no other gods beside Me.” We may think ourselves not idolaters according to our understanding of the word. But an idol simply stands for whatever we love, depend on, or delight in more than God.
In Exodus 20:5, God is jealous when our time is used for personal aggrandisement. At times, Bible study, prayers, fellowships and other things are exchanged with watching movies, browsing our phones, surfing the internet, watching EPL games and lots of other frivolities, instead of staying in the presence of our Maker. Most hearts are pre-occupied with the gods of this world, in form of fashion, fame, wealth, lust, immorality, greed, pleasure and others. Remember, God warned that we should not bow down for all such except the El-Shaddai God.
In Exodus 20:6, God asks for a space in our lives so that He can turn us back to Himself our Creator, else His anger falls on us and we are suddenly destroyed. Erase those strange idols that occupy your mind and allow the blood of Jesus to cleanse and make you whole.
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, today I repent and forsake my idolatrous and immoral life I have lived. By Your mercy, Lord, deliver me and let not Your anger fall on me, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
